FUNday at the South Street Seaport

Eight students from PS 46 traveled to the historic South Street Seaport area of Manhattan this May to join volunteers from Partnership with Children's Junior Board for a first-hand look at New York's seafaring past. Many thanks to Junior Board members Natasha Anand and Meghan Crehan for their participation. Our heartfelt thanks also goes to Steve Jacobs from the South Street Seaport who acted as our special tour guide for the day!

The kids learned about the importance of ship-going cargo to the port of New York, and marveled at the challenging living conditions that existed on-board the vessels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The girls were curious about the fact that no women were allowed on board the cargo ships at that time. Everyone agreed that working on a cargo ship must have been a hot, difficult and sometimes dangerous job.
