PARTNERSHIP WITH CHILDREN SUMMER SCHOOLS SHOW GREAT RESULTS

For the third year in a row, Partnership with Children provided summer school wraparound services to students in New York City. Over 140 students participated in programs in three schools.

The Robin Hood Foundation funded programs for a third consecutive year. At PS 64 in Manhattan and PS 67 in Brooklyn, social workers worked with 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who were held back. The program was a modified version of our Open Heart - Open Mind program, and social workers “pushed-in” to classrooms during the summer school day to assist teachers as well as work one on one with students. Social workers also selected students who needed extra assistance for after-school small group sessions.

Each small group had 10 students and was based around a theme such as photography, nutrition or basketball. Students would play cooperative games, have homework help and do activities related to their group. At the end of the summer, social workers used their “Test Monsters” stress reduction activity in order to relax students before their tests. At PS 67 students who participated in the Partnership with Children program had a 13% higher passing rate than non-Partnership with Children students; at PS 64 they passed 8% more often. The Partnership with Children program students also had increased summer school attendance rates in both schools, a 14% increase in PS 64 and 17% in PS 67.

In addition, Partnership with Children received a grant from the New York City Department of Education to run a Summer Success Academy at PS 304 in Brooklyn, which also showed excellent results. Partnership with Children students attended summer school 21% more often than non-Partnership with Children students, and passed their tests 73% of the time, compared to a 56% pass rate for students at PS 304 who did not receive services and a citywide pass rate of 51%.

The program at PS 304 was called Open Heart - Open Mind in My Community , and was implemented for 2nd and 3rd graders as part of the mayor’s plan for no social promotion for 3rd graders. The goal of the program was to help students learn more about their community. Social workers picked up students after their classes, ran activities and took field trips. Groups visited fire and police stations, and went to the library to sign up for library cards. At the end of the summer, the students invited parents and school administrators for a Community Celebration where they displayed their arts and crafts projects and shared their experiences from the summer.

Partnership with Children congratulates the students on their achievements and thanks our generous funders for their support. We look forward to continuing summer school success in the future!
